What to Do If Your Account Is Hacked

Signs Your Account May Be Hacked
Watch for these warning signs:
- Password suddenly stops working
- Emails in your Sent folder you didn't send
- Password reset emails you didn't request
- Notifications about logins from unknown locations
- Contacts receiving strange emails from you
Immediate Steps to Take
Step 1: Stay Calm
Don't panic. Quick action can limit the damage.
Step 2: Change Your Password Immediately
- If you can still log in, change your password right away
- Use a completely new, strong password
- Don't use anything similar to your old password
Step 3: Contact IT
Report the incident immediately:
- Call 1300 521 162
- Email helpdesk@netlumait.com.au
Step 4: Enable Two-Factor Authentication
If not already enabled, set up 2FA to add extra protection.
Step 5: Check for Damage
Look for:
- Emails sent from your account
- Rules forwarding your email elsewhere
- Changes to your account settings
- Connected apps you don't recognise
Step 6: Change Passwords on Other Accounts
If you used the same password elsewhere (you shouldn't, but if you did), change those passwords too.
What IT Will Do
When you report a hack, IT will:
- Secure your account
- Review login history
- Check for malicious activity
- Remove any unauthorized access
- Help you recover safely
Preventing Future Hacks
Going forward:
- Use unique passwords for each account
- Enable two-factor authentication
- Be cautious of phishing emails
- Keep software updated
- Report suspicious activity immediately
