How to Fix "Update Failed" Errors

When Updates Fail
Updates sometimes fail to install. Here's how to fix it.
Windows Update Issues
Try Again
Often updates succeed on second attempt:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update
- Click Check for updates
- Try installing again
Restart and Retry
- Restart your computer
- Go to Windows Update
- Try the update again
Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot
- Click Other troubleshooters
- Find Windows Update
- Click Run
Check Disk Space
Updates need free space:
- Make sure you have at least 20GB free
- Free up space if needed (see Disk Full guide)
- Try update again
Check Internet Connection
Updates need stable internet:
- Verify you're connected
- Try a wired connection if possible
- Avoid updating on unstable WiFi
Application Update Issues
Restart the Application
- Close the application completely
- Reopen it
- Try updating again
Manually Download Update
For Microsoft 365:
- Go to office.com
- Sign in
- Click Install apps
- Download fresh installation
- Go to the vendor's website
- Download the latest version
- Install over the existing version
Uninstall and Reinstall
If updates keep failing:
- Note your login details
- Uninstall the application
- Restart computer
- Download fresh from official source
- Install new version
Common Update Problems
"Something went wrong"
- Usually temporary
- Wait and try again
- Restart computer and retry
"Not enough space"
- Free up disk space
- Try again after clearing space
"Update takes too long"
- Large updates can take 30-60 minutes
- Don't interrupt the update
- Keep computer connected to power
Update restarts endlessly
- May need IT assistance
- Could indicate deeper issue
Preventing Update Issues
Keep Space Available
- Maintain at least 20GB free
- Clean up regularly
Don't Interrupt Updates
- Let updates complete
- Don't shut down during updates
- Keep laptop plugged in
Update Regularly
- Don't let updates pile up
- Smaller, frequent updates are easier
- Let computers update overnight

Contact IT if:
- Updates keep failing
- Error codes appear
- Computer is stuck updating
- You're unsure what to do
- Run diagnostic tools
- Force update manually
- Fix corrupted update components
