How to Fix "Disk Full" or "Low Disk Space" Errors

What "Disk Full" Means
Your computer's storage (hard drive or SSD) is full or nearly full. You can't save new files or install updates until you free up space.
Check Your Storage
Windows
- Open File Explorer
- Click This PC
- See storage bars under each drive
- Red bar = critically low space
Mac
- Apple menu > About This Mac
- Click Storage
- See colour-coded breakdown
Quick Fixes
1. Empty Recycle Bin
Deleted files still take space:
- Right-click Recycle Bin
- Click Empty Recycle Bin
- Confirm
2. Clear Downloads Folder
Old downloads accumulate:
- Open Downloads folder
- Sort by date
- Delete files you no longer need
- Empty Recycle Bin
3. Run Disk Cleanup (Windows)
- Search for Disk Cleanup
- Select your drive
- Check items to delete:
- Click OK
4. Clear Browser Cache
Browsers store lots of temporary data:
- Open browser settings
- Find Clear browsing data
- Select Cached images and files
- Clear
Finding What's Using Space
Windows
- Settings > System > Storage
- See breakdown by category
- Click categories to see details
- Remove what you don't need
Mac
- Apple > About This Mac > Storage
- Click Manage
- See recommendations
- Review categories
Freeing More Space
Uninstall Unused Programs
Windows:
- Settings > Apps > Installed apps
- Find programs you don't use
- Click Uninstall
- Open Applications folder
- Drag unused apps to Trash
- Empty Trash
Move Files to Cloud
OneDrive Files On-Demand:
- Move files to OneDrive
- Right-click > Free up space
- Files stay in OneDrive but don't use local space
Delete Large Files
Find and remove large files you don't need:
- Old videos
- Outdated backups
- Duplicate files
Prevention
Save to Cloud
Use OneDrive instead of local storage:
- Files don't fill your drive
- Access from anywhere
- Automatically backed up
Regular Cleanup
Monthly:
- Empty Recycle Bin
- Clear Downloads
- Review large files
- Uninstall unused apps

If you can't free enough space:
- May need a larger drive
