    What are Teams Channels?

Channels are spaces within a Team for specific topics, projects, or departments. They help organise conversations and files.

    Examples:

    • A "Marketing" channel for marketing discussions
    • A "Project X" channel for a specific project
    • A "General" channel for team-wide announcements

    Creating a Channel

    Step 1: Select Your Team

    • Open Microsoft Teams
    • Find your Team in the left sidebar
    • Click the three dots (...) next to the Team name

    Step 2: Add Channel

    • Click Add channel
    • Give your channel a name
    • Add a description (optional but helpful)

    Step 3: Set Privacy

    Choose who can access:

    • Standard - Everyone in the Team can see it
    • Private - Only specific members you choose
    • Shared - People outside your Team (including external guests)

    Step 4: Create

Click Add to create the channel.

    Channel Best Practices

    Naming Channels

    Use clear, descriptive names:

    Good names:

    • "Marketing Campaigns"
    • "Client Project - ABC Company"
    • "Weekly Reports"
    Avoid:
    • Vague names like "Stuff" or "Misc"
    • Very long names

    Organising Channels

    • Create channels for ongoing topics, not one-off conversations
    • Archive old channels instead of deleting them
    • Use the General channel for team-wide announcements

    Posting in Channels

    Starting a Conversation

    • Open the channel
    • Click in the "Start a post" box
    • Type your message
    • Click Post

    Replying to a Thread

    • Click Reply under the original message
    • Type your response
    • This keeps the conversation organised

    Adding Tabs to Channels

Channels can have tabs for quick access to files and apps:

    • Click the + at the top of the channel
    • Choose what to add:
    - Files - Websites - Apps like Planner or OneNote
    • Configure and save

    Managing Channels

    Editing a Channel

    • Click the three dots next to the channel
    • Click Edit this channel
    • Update name, description, or settings

    Hiding Channels

If a channel is cluttered, hide it:

    • Right-click the channel
    • Click Hide
    • It moves to "Hidden channels"

    Deleting a Channel

Only Team owners can delete channels:

    • Click the three dots
    • Click Delete this channel
    • Confirm
Warning: This deletes all conversations and files in the channel.
