Accessing Work Files Remotely
You can access your work files from home through several methods.
OneDrive
If your files are in OneDrive, you can access them from anywhere:
Through the Web
- Go to onedrive.com (or office.com)
- Sign in with your work email
- Browse and open your files
Through File Explorer
If OneDrive syncs to your computer:
- Open File Explorer
- Click OneDrive - [Your Company] in the sidebar
- Your files are there
OneDrive App
Install the OneDrive desktop app:
- Files sync automatically
- Work offline if needed
- Changes sync when you're back online
SharePoint
For team files and shared documents:
Through the Web
- Go to your SharePoint site
- Sign in if prompted
- Browse team files and libraries
Syncing SharePoint Libraries
- Open the SharePoint library
- Click Sync
- Library appears in File Explorer
VPN (For Network Drives)
If your company uses traditional network drives:
Connect via VPN
- Open your VPN application
- Sign in with work credentials
- Connect to VPN
Access Network Drives
Once connected:
- Open File Explorer
- Navigate to your network drives
- They work just like in the office
Email Attachments
For files sent via email:
- Open Outlook (web or desktop)
- Find the email with attachment
- Download or open directly
Tips for Remote File Access
Save to Cloud
- Save important files to OneDrive
- Easier to access from anywhere
- Automatically backed up
Don't Save Locally
Avoid saving only to your computer:
- If laptop fails, files are lost
- Can't access from other devices
- No automatic backup
Check Connection
If files seem slow:
- Check your internet speed
- Verify VPN is connected (if required)
- Try refreshing the page
Troubleshooting
Can't find files?
- Check you're signed in correctly
- Try searching in OneDrive
- Ask colleague where files are stored
- Check internet connection
- Try the web version instead
- Verify you have permission
- Check OneDrive is running
- Look for errors in OneDrive icon
- Restart OneDrive
