    Fixing Home WiFi Problems

Slow or unreliable WiFi makes remote work difficult. Here's how to improve it.

    Quick Fixes

    1. Restart Your Router

The most effective fix for many issues:

    • Unplug your router's power
    • Wait 30 seconds
    • Plug it back in
    • Wait 2-3 minutes for it to restart
    • Reconnect and test

    2. Move Closer to the Router

    WiFi weakens with distance:

    • Work in the same room as the router
    • Reduce walls between you and the router
    • Avoid concrete, brick, and metal barriers

    3. Reduce Interference

    Common sources of interference:

    • Microwaves
    • Cordless phones
    • Baby monitors
    • Bluetooth devices
    • Neighbouring WiFi networks

    Improve Your Signal

    Position Your Router Better

    Ideal placement:

    • Central location in your home
    • Elevated (on a shelf, not the floor)
    • Away from walls and obstructions
    • Away from other electronics

    Use Ethernet Cable

    For important work:

    • Connect directly to router with ethernet cable
    • Much faster and more stable than WiFi
    • Ideal for video calls and large file transfers

    WiFi Extenders

    If your home is large:

    • WiFi extenders boost signal to distant areas
    • Mesh systems provide better coverage
    • Position halfway between router and dead spot

    Check Your Speed

    Run a Speed Test

    • Go to speedtest.net
    • Run the test
    • Compare results to your internet plan
    For video calls, you need:
    • At least 5 Mbps download
    • At least 3 Mbps upload

    Test at Different Times

    Speed can vary:

    • Peak hours (evenings) are often slower
    • Test when others are online vs. not

    Manage Network Usage

    During Work Hours

    • Ask family to avoid streaming video
    • Pause large downloads
    • Limit connected devices
    • Use lower quality for personal streaming

    Check Connected Devices

Too many devices can slow things down:

    • Smart TVs
    • Gaming consoles
    • Phones and tablets
    • Smart home devices

    When to Call Your Provider

    Contact your internet provider if:

    • Speed is much slower than your plan
    • Connection drops frequently
    • Problems persist after troubleshooting
    • You need a faster plan

    When to Contact IT

    Contact IT if:

    • You need help with VPN
    • Work applications are slow
    • You need equipment recommendations
    • You're having ongoing connection issues
