    How to Set Up Google Drive on Your Desktop

    What is Google Drive for Desktop?

    Google Drive for Desktop syncs files between your computer and Google Drive, letting you access your cloud files directly from File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).

    Downloading Google Drive for Desktop

    Step 1: Download the Installer

    • Go to google.com/drive/download
    • Click Download Drive for desktop
    • Save the installer file

    Step 2: Install the Application

    Windows:

    • Run the downloaded .exe file
    • Follow the installation prompts
    • Sign in with your Google account when prompted
    Mac:
    • Open the downloaded .dmg file
    • Drag Google Drive to Applications
    • Open Google Drive from Applications
    • Sign in with your Google account

    Configuring Google Drive for Desktop

    Choosing Sync Method

    After installation, choose how to access your files:

    Stream files (recommended):

    • Files stay in the cloud and download on demand
    • Saves hard drive space
    • Requires internet to access files
    Mirror files:
    • All files download to your computer
    • Uses more hard drive space
    • Files available offline

    Setting Up Streaming

    • Click the Google Drive icon in your system tray
    • Click the Settings gear icon
    • Select Preferences
    • Under "Google Drive", select Stream files
    • Click Save

    Setting Up Mirroring

    • Open Drive preferences
    • Under "Google Drive", select Mirror files
    • Choose a location for synced files
    • Click Save

    Accessing Your Files

    Windows

    Your Google Drive appears in File Explorer under "Google Drive" in the navigation pane.

    Mac

    Your Google Drive appears in Finder under "Locations" in the sidebar.

    Adding Files to Google Drive

    Simply save or drag files to your Google Drive folder. They will automatically sync to the cloud.

    Checking Sync Status

    Look at the file icons:

    • Cloud icon: File is online only
    • Check mark: File is synced
    • Sync arrows: Currently syncing

    Troubleshooting Sync Issues

    If files are not syncing:

    • Check your internet connection
    • Click the Drive icon and look for errors
    • Pause and resume sync
    • Restart Google Drive for Desktop
