4 min read
Updated 19 December 2025
Why Check Internet Speed?
Slow internet can make:
- Video calls choppy
- File downloads take forever
- Websites load slowly
- Cloud apps feel sluggish
Running a Speed Test
Step 1: Close Other Programs
For accurate results:
- Close video calls
- Stop any downloads
- Close streaming video
Step 2: Visit a Speed Test Site
Go to one of these sites in your browser:
- speedtest.net (most common)
- fast.com (simple, by Netflix)
Step 3: Run the Test
Click the Go or Start button and wait about 30 seconds.
Step 4: Read Your Results
You'll see:
- Download speed - How fast you receive data (most important)
- Upload speed - How fast you send data
- Ping - Response time in milliseconds
Understanding Your Results
Download Speed
| Speed | Experience | |-------|------------| | Under 5 Mbps | Very slow, video calls will struggle | | 5-25 Mbps | Basic browsing OK, video calls may have issues | | 25-100 Mbps | Good for most office work | | Over 100 Mbps | Excellent |
For Video Calls (Teams, Zoom)
- Minimum: 1.5 Mbps download and upload
- Recommended: 4 Mbps or higher
- Group HD video: 8+ Mbps
Ping
- Under 20ms: Excellent
- 20-50ms: Good
- 50-100ms: OK
- Over 100ms: May cause delays
What If Speed Is Slow?
Quick Fixes:
- Restart your router - Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in
- Move closer to the router - If on WiFi
- Use a cable - Ethernet is faster than WiFi
- Check for other users - Someone streaming video?
- Close bandwidth-heavy apps - Downloads, streaming
