    Checking Your Windows Version

Knowing your Windows version is helpful when troubleshooting problems or checking if your computer can run certain software.

    Quick Method: Winver

The fastest way to check your Windows version:

    • Press Windows key + R
    • Type winver
    • Press Enter
    A window will appear showing:

    • Windows edition (Home, Pro, Enterprise)
    • Version number (like 22H2)
    • OS build number

    Using Settings

    For more detailed information:

    • Press Windows key + I to open Settings
    • Click System
    • Scroll down and click About
    This shows:

    • Windows edition
    • Version
    • OS build
    • System type (64-bit or 32-bit)
    • Processor information
    • RAM amount

    Understanding Version Numbers

    Windows Editions

    • Windows 11 Home: For personal use
    • Windows 11 Pro: For business, includes extra security features
    • Windows 10 Home/Pro: Previous version, still supported

    Version Numbers

The version (like 22H2) tells you when your Windows was last updated:

    • 22H2 means the second half of 2022
    • 23H2 means the second half of 2023
    • 24H2 means the second half of 2024
Higher numbers are newer and generally more secure.

Checking If Windows Is Up to Date

    • Open Settings (Windows key + I)
    • Click Windows Update
    • Click Check for updates
If updates are available, install them. Your computer may need to restart.

    Windows 10 vs Windows 11

How to tell which you have:

    Windows 11

    • Centred taskbar (by default)
    • Rounded corners on windows
    • New Start menu design
    • Released late 2021

    Windows 10

    • Left-aligned taskbar
    • Square window corners
    • Tiles in Start menu
    • Released 2015

    Is Your Windows Still Supported?

Microsoft stops supporting old versions eventually:

    Windows 11

    • Currently fully supported
    • Version 21H2 support ended October 2023
    • Keep your version current for security

    Windows 10

    • Mainstream support ends October 2025
    • After this date, security updates will stop
    • Plan to upgrade to Windows 11 before then

    Checking If You Can Upgrade

To see if your computer can run Windows 11:

    • Search for PC Health Check in the Start menu
    • Run the app
    • It will tell you if your PC meets Windows 11 requirements
If the app is not installed, download it from Microsoft.
