How to Search for Files on Your Computer

Finding Files Quickly
Can't remember where you saved something? Here's how to search.
Windows Search
Quick Search
- Click the Search icon in taskbar (or press Windows key)
- Start typing the file name
- Results appear as you type
- Click the file to open
Search in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer
- Navigate to a folder (or stay in This PC for everywhere)
- Type in the Search box (top right)
- Press Enter
Search Tips for Windows
By file name: Just type the name or part of it
By file type:
- type:document
- type:photo
- type:video
- date:today
- date:last week
- date:last month
Mac Search (Spotlight)
Quick Search
- Press Command + Space
- Type the file name
- Results appear instantly
- Click to open
Search in Finder
- Open Finder
- Press Command + F
- Type your search
- Use filters to narrow results
Searching OneDrive
Online
- Go to onedrive.com
- Use the Search box at the top
- Searches file names and content
In File Explorer/Finder
Just search normally - OneDrive files are included if synced.
Searching Emails
Outlook
- Click in the Search box at top
- Type keywords
- Use filters:
Advanced Search Tips
Use Wildcards
- = any characters (report finds report2024, reports, etc.)
- ? = single character (rep?rt finds report, repart, etc.)
Search by File Content
Both Windows and Mac can search inside documents:
- Search for a phrase you remember
- Works for Word, Excel, text files
Narrow Your Search
If too many results:
- Add more keywords
- Search specific folders
- Use filters for date, type, etc.
Still Can't Find It?
Check These Places
- Downloads folder
- Desktop
- Recent Documents
- Recycle Bin
- OneDrive Recycle Bin
- Email attachments
Ask Yourself
- What was the file called?
- When did you last work on it?
- Who might have sent it?
- What program did you use?
