Dealing with Spam and Junk Email

Spam wastes time and can be dangerous. Here is how to keep your inbox clean.

    Marking Email as Junk

    Outlook Desktop

    • Right-click on the spam email
    • Click Junk > Block Sender
This moves the email to Junk and blocks future emails from that sender.

    Outlook Web

    • Select the spam email
    • Click Junk in the toolbar
    • Choose Block or Junk

    Blocking Specific Senders

    Outlook Desktop

    • Click Home > Junk > Junk E-mail Options
    • Click the Blocked Senders tab
    • Click Add
    • Enter the email address or domain
    • Click OK

    Outlook Web

    • Click Settings > View all Outlook settings
    • Click Mail > Junk email
    • Under Blocked senders and domains, click Add
    • Enter the address to block
    • Click Save

    Unsubscribing from Newsletters

Many unwanted emails are newsletters you accidentally signed up for:

    • Open the email
    • Scroll to the bottom
    • Look for an Unsubscribe link
    • Click it to stop receiving emails
Warning: Only unsubscribe from legitimate newsletters. Clicking links in suspicious emails can be dangerous.

    Checking Your Junk Folder

Sometimes legitimate emails end up in Junk:

    • Check your Junk folder regularly
    • If you find a good email there:
    - Right-click it - Click Junk > Not Junk - This trains Outlook to recognise it

    Recognising Dangerous Spam

    Be cautious of emails that:

    • Ask for passwords or personal information
    • Have urgent or threatening language
    • Contain unexpected attachments
    • Come from addresses that look slightly wrong
When in doubt, do not click any links. Report suspicious emails to IT.

    Reporting Phishing

If you receive a suspicious email:

    • Do not click any links
    • Do not reply
    • Forward it to helpdesk@netlumait.com.au
    • Delete the email
