Access Control Installation Cost in Australia — What to Budget and What Drives the Price

Why Access Control Pricing Is Not Straightforward

If you ask three access control providers for quotes and get three very different numbers, you are not alone. Access control pricing varies significantly based on the technology chosen, the number of doors, the credential type, whether you need cloud management, and the quality and experience of the installer.

This post does not give you a single number, because there is not one. Instead, it breaks down the components of cost so you can have an informed conversation with any provider and understand what you are comparing.

    The Main Cost Components

    Hardware

Door controllersThese are the brains of each door. They process credentials and decide whether to unlock. Cost varies by brand, feature set, and whether the system is cloud-managed or on-premises. Expect to pay more for cloud-connected controllers with modern encryption.
ReadersThe device on the wall that reads the card, fob, mobile credential, or biometric. Basic card readers are relatively affordable. Long-range Bluetooth readers (for hands-free mobile access) cost more. Biometric readers (fingerprint or facial recognition) cost significantly more again.
Electric locksThe locking mechanism controlled by the system. Electric strikes (which keep a standard door handle mechanism and just release the latch electronically) are the most common and least expensive. Magnetic locks (maglocks) are stronger and suit high-traffic doors. Electric mortice locks offer the most secure and discreet installation but cost more. A heavy-duty door in a high-security area may also need a door closer and additional hardware to work reliably with an electric lock.
Door contacts and request-to-exit (REX) sensorsThese tell the system when a door is open and allow people to exit without a credential. Small cost per door but necessary for a complete installation.
Cards and fobsThe physical credentials. Cards cost a few dollars each. For a team of 30 people, this is a minor cost. For a large organisation issuing hundreds of cards, it adds up.
CablingIf the site needs significant cable runs, this is a real cost — particularly in older buildings with concrete walls or limited cable pathways. Wireless readers reduce this cost but have a higher per-reader hardware cost.

    Software and Licences

Cloud-managed systems typically charge an ongoing subscription fee per door, per user, or per site. This might range from a modest monthly fee for a small system to several hundred dollars per month for a large multi-site deployment.

On-premises systems may have upfront software licence costs and annual maintenance or upgrade fees.

Understand the ongoing cost clearly before committing. A cheap hardware quote with high ongoing software fees can be more expensive over three years than a more expensive upfront purchase with no ongoing fees.

    Installation Labour

Installation cost varies by the complexity of the job. Factors include:

    • Number of doors
    • Type of lock hardware (some are harder to install than others)
    • Cabling requirements
    • Building construction (concrete vs. stud-frame affects cable routing difficulty)
    • Travel to site
A simple single-door installation on an existing timber frame door might take two to three hours. A full office fit-out across ten doors with complex cable routing might take two to three days.

    Configuration and Setup

After hardware is installed, the system needs to be configured: users and credentials need to be set up, access rules programmed, integrations with other systems tested. For a small system, this might be an hour. For a complex multi-site deployment with CCTV integration and visitor management, it is a more significant project.

    Ongoing Support and Maintenance

Most providers offer some form of ongoing support agreement. This might cover software updates, remote monitoring, priority response to faults, and periodic on-site maintenance. The cost varies by agreement scope.

Rough Budget Ranges for Australian Businesses

Rather than misleading you with a precise number, here are rough categories:

Small single-door system (e.g. stockroom or server room access)A self-contained single-door installation with a card reader, controller, and electric lock. This is the entry point for most businesses.
Small office fit-out (3–5 doors)Covering main entry, a secure back office, and a server room, for example. This is a common starting point for growing businesses.
Medium office fit-out (6–15 doors)A more complete installation covering multiple secure areas, potentially including visitor management and CCTV integration.
Large or complex installationsMulti-site, large buildings, specialist environments, or systems with significant integration work. These are quoted individually based on scope.
Ongoing software subscription costs, if applicable, are typically charged monthly or annually and should be budgeted separately from the upfront installation.

    What Drives the Price Up

    • More doors and access points
    • Biometric readers instead of card readers
    • Mobile credential system (Bluetooth readers are more expensive)
    • Cloud-managed vs. basic on-premises
    • Difficult cabling environments (concrete, older buildings)
    • Integration with CCTV, alarm systems, or visitor management platforms
    • Multi-site management requirements
    • Higher-security lock hardware

    What Can Reduce the Cost

    • Wireless readers (reduces cabling cost but increases hardware cost)
    • Starting with a smaller scope and expanding later
    • Choosing a system where you can self-administer (reducing ongoing service calls)
    • Simpler credential types (standard card rather than biometric)

    Getting an Accurate Quote

The only way to get an accurate number for your situation is to have a provider assess your site. A good provider will walk through your building, understand your requirements, and provide a detailed quote that breaks down hardware, installation, software, and ongoing costs separately.

Be wary of quotes provided without a site visit for anything beyond a single-door installation — the variables are too many.
