    When Windows Keeps Restarting

A computer that restarts on its own can be caused by software problems, hardware issues, or both. Here is what to try.

    Types of Restart Problems

    Random Restarts During Use

The computer restarts unexpectedly while you are working.

    Restart Loop

The computer restarts, shows the Windows logo, then restarts again repeatedly.

    Restarts After Blue Screen

You see a blue error screen briefly before the computer restarts.

    Quick Fixes to Try

    Check for Overheating

    Overheating causes automatic shutdowns:

    • Feel if the computer is hot
    • Make sure vents are not blocked
    • Clear dust from vents if possible
    • Use the computer on a hard, flat surface
For laptops, never use on soft surfaces like beds that block airflow.

    Check for Pending Updates

Sometimes restarts are Windows installing updates:

    • After restart, open Settings (Windows key + I)
    • Go to Windows Update
    • Check if updates are installing
    • Let updates complete before working

    Stopping Automatic Restart After Errors

To see error messages instead of immediate restarts:

    • Right-click the Start button
    • Click System
    • Click Advanced system settings
    • Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings
    • Uncheck Automatically restart
    • Click OK
Now you will see error details instead of immediate restarts.

    Breaking the Restart Loop

If stuck in a restart loop:

    Access Recovery Options

    • During boot, hold the power button to force shutdown
    • Repeat 2-3 times
    • Windows should show recovery options

    Try Safe Mode

    • From recovery, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options
    • Click Startup Settings
    • Click Restart
    • Press 4 for Safe Mode
If Safe Mode works, the problem may be a driver or program.

    Uninstall Recent Updates

    From recovery options:

    • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options
    • Click Uninstall Updates
    • Try Uninstall latest quality update first
    • Restart and check if the problem is fixed

    System Restore

    If you have restore points:

    • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options
    • Click System Restore
    • Choose a restore point from before the problem started
    • Follow the prompts

    Checking for Hardware Problems

    Check Event Viewer

    After a restart:

    • Press Windows key and type Event Viewer
    • Open Event Viewer
    • Expand Windows Logs > System
    • Look for red Critical or Error entries around the restart time
Note any error messages to share with IT.

    Run Memory Diagnostics

    • Press Windows key and type Windows Memory Diagnostic
    • Open it and click Restart now and check for problems
    • Your computer will restart and test memory
    • Results appear after the next login

    When to Contact IT

    Contact helpdesk@netlumait.com.au immediately if:

    • The restart loop will not stop
    • You smell burning or see smoke
    • The computer makes clicking or grinding sounds
    • Important work is at risk
    • You cannot access your files
These may indicate hardware failure requiring urgent attention.

    What to Tell IT

    • When the restarts started
    • What you were doing when it first happened
    • Any error messages you saw
    • Whether the computer feels hot
    • Any unusual sounds
