Updated 14 December 2025
What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is malicious software that:
- Locks your files or computer
- Demands payment to unlock them
- Often threatens to delete your files
How Ransomware Spreads
Common infection methods:
- Opening infected email attachments
- Clicking malicious links
- Downloading software from untrusted sites
- Visiting compromised websites
- Using infected USB drives
Warning Signs
Watch for these signs:
- Files suddenly won't open
- File extensions have changed
- A ransom message appears on screen
- Your computer becomes very slow
- Programs stop working properly
How to Prevent Ransomware
Be Careful with Emails
- Don't open attachments from unknown senders
- Be suspicious of unexpected attachments, even from known contacts
- Report suspicious emails to IT
Think Before You Click
- Avoid clicking links in suspicious emails
- Don't download software from untrusted websites
- Be wary of pop-ups asking you to download anything
Keep Everything Updated
Updates include security patches that protect against ransomware.
Use Strong Passwords
Weak passwords can let attackers into your system.
Back Up Your Work
Save important files to OneDrive or SharePoint. IT maintains backups, but you should save work regularly.
What to Do If You Suspect Ransomware
Immediate Actions:
- Disconnect from the network - Unplug the network cable or turn off WiFi
- Don't turn off your computer - IT may need to investigate
- Contact IT immediately - Call 1300 521 162
- Don't pay the ransom - There's no guarantee you'll get your files back
What IT Will Do:
- Isolate the affected computer
- Assess the damage
- Restore files from backups
- Investigate how it happened
- Strengthen protections
Remember
The best protection is prevention. If something seems suspicious, stop and ask IT. It's always better to ask than to click something dangerous.
