    Safe Browsing Basics

The internet is essential for work, but it has risks. Here's how to stay safe.

    Look for HTTPS

When visiting websites, especially when entering information:

    • Look at the address bar
    • It should start with https:// (not just http://)
    • Look for the padlock icon 🔒
HTTPS means the connection is encrypted and more secure.

    Be Careful What You Download

Only download files from trusted sources:

    Safe sources:

    • Official company websites
    • Known software providers
    • Links from IT
    Risky sources:
    • Unknown websites
    • Email attachments from strangers
    • Pop-up download prompts
If unsure, ask IT before downloading.

    Watch for Fake Websites

Scammers create fake versions of real websites. Check:

    • The web address is spelled correctly
    • It's the official domain (e.g., microsoft.com not micros0ft.com)
    • The site looks professional, not hastily made

    Handle Pop-ups Safely

    Dangerous pop-ups might say:

    • "Your computer is infected!"
    • "Click here to speed up your PC!"
    • "You've won a prize!"
    What to do:
    • Close the pop-up using the X
    • Don't click anything inside the pop-up
    • If it won't close, close the browser completely

    Use Strong, Unique Passwords

    When creating accounts on websites:

    • Use different passwords for different sites
    • Never use your work password on other websites
    • Consider using a password manager

    Think Before You Click

    Before clicking any link:

    • Hover over it to see where it goes
    • Ask yourself if you were expecting this link
    • Be extra careful with shortened URLs

    Keep Software Updated

    Updates often include security fixes:

    • Allow browser updates
    • Keep your computer updated
    • Let IT manage updates when possible

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

If you think you've visited a dangerous site:

    • Close the browser immediately
    • Don't enter any information
    • Contact IT and explain what happened
    • Run a security scan if IT advises
