How to Restart Your Computer Properly

When to Restart
Restarting fixes many common issues:
- Slow performance
- Programs not responding
- Weird error messages
- After software updates
- When IT asks you to
Restarting Windows
Method 1: Start Menu (Best)
- Click the Start button
- Click the Power icon
- Click Restart
Method 2: Keyboard Shortcut
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete
- Click the Power icon (bottom right)
- Click Restart
Method 3: Alt + F4
- Click on the desktop (not on any window)
- Press Alt + F4
- Select Restart from the dropdown
- Click OK
Restarting Mac
Method 1: Apple Menu (Best)
- Click the Apple menu
- Click Restart
- Confirm if prompted
Method 2: Keyboard Shortcut
Press Control + Command + Power button (or Touch ID)
Saving Your Work First
Before restarting:
- Save any open documents
- Close important applications
- Check for unsaved work
Shutdown vs Restart vs Sleep
Shutdown
Completely turns off the computer. Use when:
- Leaving for the day
- Computer won't be used for a while
- You're moving the computer
Restart
Turns off and back on again. Use when:
- Fixing problems
- After updates
- Something isn't working right
Sleep
Low power mode, quick wake up. Use when:
- Taking a short break
- Moving between meetings
- Leaving briefly
Force Restart (Emergency Only)
If your computer is completely frozen and won't respond:
Windows:
Hold the power button for 5-10 seconds until it turns off. Then turn it back on.Mac:
Hold the power button for 10 seconds until it turns off.Warning: This can cause data loss. Only use when the computer is completely unresponsive.
After Restarting
- Give the computer a minute to fully start
- Let programs launch
- Check if your issue is fixed
