Why Is My Internet Slow?
Slow internet can be caused by many factors. Here's how to diagnose and fix.
Test Your Speed
Run a Speed Test
- Go to speedtest.net
- Click Go
- Note your download and upload speeds
What You Need
| Activity | Download Speed | Upload Speed | |----------|---------------|--------------| | Basic browsing | 5 Mbps | 1 Mbps | | Video calls | 5-10 Mbps | 3-5 Mbps | | HD video calls | 10-25 Mbps | 5-10 Mbps | | Large file downloads | 25+ Mbps | - |
Quick Fixes
1. Restart Your Router
The most effective fix:
- Unplug router power
- Wait 30 seconds
- Plug back in
- Wait 2-3 minutes
2. Move Closer to Router
WiFi signal weakens with distance:
- Work in same room as router
- Reduce walls between you and router
3. Use Ethernet Cable
Wired is faster than wireless:
- Connect laptop directly to router
- Much more stable for video calls
4. Reduce Other Usage
During work hours:
- No streaming video
- Pause large downloads
- Ask family to limit usage
Check for Issues
Too Many Devices
Each device uses bandwidth:
- Disconnect devices not in use
- Check for devices you forgot about
- Smart home devices add up
Outdated Equipment
Old routers can be slow:
- Routers over 5 years old may need replacing
- Contact your internet provider about upgrades
Wrong Band
If you have dual-band WiFi:
- 5GHz is faster (shorter range)
- 2.4GHz has longer range (slower)
- Connect to 5GHz when close to router
Optimise Your Setup
Router Position
Place your router:
- In central location
- Elevated (shelf, not floor)
- Away from walls
- Away from microwaves and cordless phones
WiFi Extender
For large homes:
- WiFi extenders boost signal
- Mesh systems provide better coverage
- Position strategically
Check Your Plan
Is Your Plan Fast Enough?
- Review your internet plan speed
- Compare to your test results
- Consider upgrading if needed
Contact Your Provider If
- Speeds are much slower than plan
- Connection drops frequently
- Problems persist after troubleshooting
For Video Calls
Improve Video Call Quality
- Use ethernet if possible
- Close unnecessary applications
- Turn off video if audio is breaking up
- Use phone audio as backup
