Quick Fixes to Try First
Before calling IT, try these simple steps:
1. Restart Your Computer
Many slowness issues are fixed by a simple restart:
- Save your work
- Click Start > Power > Restart
- Wait for it to fully restart
2. Close Unused Programs
Each open program uses resources:
- Close browser tabs you don't need
- Close applications you're not using
- Check for programs in the system tray
3. Check What's Using Resources
Windows:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Escape to open Task Manager
- Click More details if needed
- Look at the CPU and Memory columns
- Close programs using high amounts
- Open Activity Monitor (search in Spotlight)
- Check CPU and Memory tabs
- Close resource-heavy apps
Common Causes of Slowness
Too Many Browser Tabs
Each tab uses memory. Close tabs you don't need:
- Right-click the tab bar
- Click Close other tabs
Too Many Startup Programs
Programs that start with Windows slow down boot time:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Escape
- Click the Startup tab
- Disable programs you don't need at startup
Low Disk Space
When your drive is almost full:
- Delete files you don't need
- Empty the Recycle Bin
- Move files to OneDrive
Software Updates Needed
Outdated software can run slowly:
- Check Windows Update
- Let updates install
- Restart after updates
