What "Out of Memory" Means
Your computer has run out of RAM (working memory) to run programs. This is different from storage space - memory is used for running applications.
Immediate Fixes
1. Close Unused Programs
Each open program uses memory:
- Look at programs in taskbar
- Close programs you're not using
- Don't forget about background programs
2. Close Browser Tabs
Browser tabs are memory-hungry:
- Close tabs you're not using
- Each tab uses memory
- 20+ tabs can use several gigabytes
3. Restart the Problem Application
The application may have a memory leak:
- Save your work
- Close the application
- Reopen it
- Continue working
4. Restart Your Computer
The most effective fix:
- Save all your work
- Restart your computer
- Only open what you need
Finding Memory Hogs
Windows Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Escape
- Click More details if needed
- Click Memory column to sort
- See which programs use the most
- Close unnecessary high-memory programs
Mac Activity Monitor
- Open Activity Monitor (search in Spotlight)
- Click Memory tab
- Sort by memory usage
- See which apps use most memory
