    When Programs Stop Responding

A frozen or "Not Responding" application doesn't react to clicks or keyboard input.

    Wait First

    Sometimes programs temporarily freeze while:

    • Processing large files
    • Loading data
    • Completing complex operations
Give it 30-60 seconds before taking action.

    If Waiting Doesn't Work

    Force Close the Application

    Windows:

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Escape to open Task Manager
    • Find the frozen application
    • Click on it to select
    • Click End Task
    Mac:
    • Press Command + Option + Escape
    • Select the frozen application
    • Click Force Quit

Save Your Work First (If Possible)

    Before force closing:

    • Try switching to other windows
    • See if you can save work in other apps
    • Note what you were working on (you may need to redo it)

    After Force Closing

    Restart the Application

    • Wait a moment
    • Reopen the application
    • Check for recovered files (many apps auto-recover)

    Look for Auto-Saved Files

    Many applications auto-save:

    Microsoft Office:

    • Opens Document Recovery panel
    • Shows auto-saved versions
    • Click to recover
    Other apps:
    • Check for backup files
    • Look in temp folders
    • Application may prompt recovery on restart

    Preventing Freezes

    Close Unused Programs

Too many open programs can cause issues:

    • Close apps you're not using
    • Watch for browser tabs (each uses memory)
    • Restart your computer weekly

    Keep Software Updated

    Updates often fix performance issues:

    • Install Windows updates
    • Update your applications
    • Let IT maintain your computer

    Don't Overload Applications

    • Work with reasonably sized files
    • Close and reopen large spreadsheets periodically
    • Split very large documents if possible

    When to Worry

    Occasional Freezes

Normal - just restart the app and continue.

    Frequent Freezes

    May indicate:

    • Not enough memory
    • Software conflicts
    • Computer issues
    • Time to contact IT

    System Freezes (Whole Computer)

    If your entire computer freezes:

    • Wait 2-3 minutes
    • Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete
    • As last resort, hold power button for 10 seconds
    • Contact IT if it happens often
