What is VPN?
VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure connection to your work network. It lets you:
- Access work files and systems remotely
- Browse securely on public WiFi
- Appear as if you're in the office
Before You Start
You'll need:
- VPN software (usually provided by IT)
- Your work login credentials
- Possibly a secondary authentication method (2FA)
Connecting to VPN (General Steps)
Most VPN apps work similarly:
Step 1: Open VPN Application
Look for your VPN app:
- In the Start menu (Windows)
- In Applications (Mac)
- In the system tray (bottom right)
- GlobalProtect
- Cisco AnyConnect
- FortiClient
- Windows built-in VPN
Step 2: Sign In
- Enter your work email/username
- Enter your password
- Complete any 2FA prompts (authentication app, text message)
Step 3: Connect
- Click Connect
- Wait for the connection to establish
- Look for a "Connected" status
Step 4: Verify Connection
Once connected:
- VPN icon may appear in the system tray
- You can access work resources
- Some personal browsing may be slower
Disconnecting from VPN
When you're done:
- Open the VPN application
- Click Disconnect
- Verify it shows "Disconnected"
- You've finished working
- You're back in the office
- You don't need access to work resources
Troubleshooting
Can't connect?
- Check your internet connection first
- Verify your password is correct
- Try restarting the VPN app
- Restart your computer
- Contact IT if problems persist
- Make sure VPN shows as connected
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting
- Check if the specific resource is available
- Check your internet stability
- Move closer to WiFi router
- Try a wired connection
- Contact IT if it continues
VPN Best Practices
Do:
- Connect when working remotely
- Disconnect when done
- Use on untrusted networks (coffee shops, hotels)
- Share your VPN credentials
- Stay connected when not needed
- Use VPN for personal browsing if not necessary
