    Speeding Up a Slow Computer

A slow computer can waste hours of your time. Here are quick fixes you can try before calling IT.

    Quick Fixes (Try These First)

    Restart Your Computer

It sounds simple, but restarting clears temporary files and resets memory:

    • Save all your work
    • Click Start > Power > Restart
    • Wait for the computer to fully restart
    • Check if performance has improved

    Close Unnecessary Programs

Too many open programs use memory and processing power:

    • Look at your taskbar for running programs
    • Close any programs you are not using
    • Check the system tray (bottom right) for background programs
    • Right-click and close or exit programs you do not need

    Close Browser Tabs

    Each browser tab uses memory:

    • Close tabs you are not actively using
    • Bookmark pages you want to return to later
    • Consider using only one browser at a time

Checking What Is Slowing Things Down

    Using Task Manager

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
    • Click the Processes tab
    • Click on CPU or Memory to sort by usage
    • Look for programs using high percentages
If something unfamiliar is using lots of resources, note the name and contact IT.

    Freeing Up Disk Space

A full hard drive causes slowdowns:

    Check Available Space

    • Open File Explorer (Windows key + E)
    • Click This PC
    • Look at your main drive (usually C:)
    • If it shows red, you need to free up space

    Use Disk Cleanup

    • Press Windows key and type Disk Cleanup
    • Open Disk Cleanup
    • Select your main drive and click OK
    • Check the boxes for files you want to delete
    • Click OK and confirm

    Empty the Recycle Bin

    • Right-click the Recycle Bin on your desktop
    • Click Empty Recycle Bin
    • Confirm the deletion

    Reducing Startup Programs

Too many programs starting with Windows slows down boot time:

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
    • Click the Startup tab
    • Look for programs with High impact
    • Right-click programs you do not need at startup and click Disable
Only disable programs you recognise. Leave security software enabled.

    Checking for Viruses

Malware can slow down your computer:

    • Open Windows Security (search for it in Start)
    • Click Virus & threat protection
    • Click Quick scan
    • Wait for the scan to complete
If threats are found, let the software remove them or contact IT.

When These Fixes Do Not Help

If your computer is still slow after trying these steps, the problem may be:

    • Not enough RAM (memory)
    • An old or failing hard drive
    • A problem with Windows itself
    • Outdated hardware
These issues require IT support to diagnose and fix.

    When to Contact IT

    Contact helpdesk@netlumait.com.au if:

    • The computer is still slow after trying these fixes
    • You notice unusual behaviour (pop-ups, strange sounds)
