Assignment of Benefit Changes: What Medical Practices Need to Know Before 1 July 2026
For medical practices using Best Practice Premier and other clinical software platforms, the announcement brings welcome relief and greater flexibility.
What Is Changing?
The Government has confirmed that a 12-month transition period will commence on 1 July 2026.
Under the revised approach:
- Verbal consent will be available across all settings for twelve months.
- Enduring Assignment of Benefit arrangements will become available for MyMedicare registered patients, aged care residents, and patients attending Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations.
- Compliance activities will initially focus on education and support rather than enforcement.
- Further consultation with the healthcare sector will continue throughout the transition period.
What Does This Mean for Practices?
The biggest takeaway is that practices no longer need to rush major workflow changes before 1 July 2026.
While digital Assignment of Benefit processes remain part of the long-term direction, healthcare providers now have additional time to evaluate:
- Patient consent workflows
- SMS communication systems
- Staff training requirements
- Practice management software updates
- Record retention processes
